Cruise Ship dock--help for Zihuatanejo, Mexico

Post by mkwart »

Hello:

I am an Alaskan visiting Zihuatanejo. The town just had a march and demonstration against building a huge dock for cruise ships in their bay. The cruise ships now use smaller ships to offload people into town.

I remembered that Sitka had a similar issue and I promised some people here to look into it. Was the dock issue at Sitka resolved? Who should I direct people here to for more information?

The Zihutanejo anti dock website is sos.bahia.org. I am returning to Alaska on Dec 4. Thanks.

I was in Zihua about 1.5yrs ago... Anita's Place
All the bad AND good reviews are true... I tried really hard to get a picture of the green lizards in the bedroom at night... they're fast...

So, did any of those marches go past many of the Tourist shops full of novelties, or past the bars full margarita sippers?

On the other hand, we could look closer to home for copycat ideas:

Parting thoughts... catch the ferry from Playa Linda north of Ixtapa out to the island. The day we were there it was jam packed with Mexican Tourists, but it was a fun day trip with some average snorkling.

PS... you got the url wrong: http://www.sosbahia.org/
But I'm not sure all of those Mexican kids I saw down there are bilingual enough to read this completely American-English website... hmmm...

Reply to Bobo on the cruise ship dock issue

I didn't need tourist tips (I've been going to Zihuatanejo 5 years), but help to network people in Zihutanejo to those in Sitka who were also concerned about a cruise ship dock.

I have gotten the information I need from someone else in Sitka.

Maybe somebody else can use the tourist tips then...

Did a bit of Googling about the dock... didn't find much in English:
http://www.google.com/search?q=Zihuatan ... +ship+dock
Some in Espanol:
http://www.google.com.mx/search?hl=es&q ... uelle+nave

I did like this petition: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/sosb ... index.html
Lot's of Juneau folks on there... Even a few signatures in Spanish (locals?)...

It is amazing what 'disappears' on the Internet too... not much recollection left of Sitka's 'battle':
http://www.google.com/search?q=sitka+deep+water+dock
http://www.google.com/search?q=sitka+cruise+ship+dock
(Hey, look at that, this thread is on that search's first page!)

Well, Dock or No Dock... hope the residents of Z. don't succumb to too much foreign interference.
US cruise ship visitors or US environmentalists, both which seem to be lobbying hard...

And... as long as they don't take out the AK Air terminal, so I can still visit!
