A little new over here....

Post by kdelacruz »

I moved to Sitka a little bit ago and am finally starting to get a bit settled. Many of the things I've always enjoyed are not available to me, but I'm willing to make the most of it. Hopefully next semester I'll be able to enroll in the university and meet people my age.

Until then, I was wondering how the process of advertising works around here? For instance, I'd like to offer spanish or Japanese lessons. I'm wondering what the popular ways of advertising are. Would it be better to put an advert. in the newspaper? Or put something up at the super-market bulletin board? Whats the best way to go?

Also, where does the younger crowd around here hang out, usually? I haven't completely adapted to the change of time zone, so I usually like to hang out in evenings/at night.... but I've seen that most places close around 5:00.

Hi. This forum is good, you might also try the Sitka Soup. They offer classifieds for both print and online. I would suggest posting some info about the classes your offering at Lakside, and Seamart. Im not sure what your age group is, and with limited activites around here maybe look for upcoming events around town, and things like that. I think weekends people bounce around from pbar to kellys. Out Sawmill Creek.
Don't waste time staring at closed doors, rather look around to see what oppourtunities lay ahead. Know that everything happens for a reason, and in time all things will work out as they should.

If you're interested in offering lessons in Spanish and Japanese you could talk to the high school and the middle school. They might take down your information, and refer people, or allow you to advertise on their premises.

When it comes to meeting people I would try hiking or fishing. My family tends to meet people easily on the trails and it is always nice to chat while fishing on the beach. Maybe you could get a job at one of the coffee shops (if you don't already have a job somewhere), you sound like you're in the same age bracket as most of the ladies at Highliner. Best of luck!

Welcome to Sitka,

Hiking and boating is popular on the weekends and daylight hours. Since the inevitable fall is upon us now we must utilize our own creativeness to hunker down and find things to do indoors, but dont worry thats not tough to do around here.

Starting in September the contra group in town puts on dances once or twice a month usually every other saturday at Blatchley Midle School (watch the newspaper for dates/times) a diverse age group that is extremely welcoming.

The larkspur cafe has lots of opportunity for evening music, open mic nights, organic foods/drinks and a happy atmosphere, also a diverse age group that like to hang out there on a regular basis.

The Alaska day festival meets regularly for planning upcoming events (that take place in October) and they take any and all volunteers for people looking to learn about the annual festival and help organize. (not sure who the person of contact is though...may be on the visitors bureau website, sitka.org)

Cheers!

The first step toward teaching Spanish might be to visit the Spanish conversation group on Thursdays from 5-6:30PM at the Career Center (right up the street from Pacific High School). There is also a French group on Tuesday evenings at the same location. There are wonderful young people there. I think you would enjoy it.

Does anyone know if that Spanish hour is still going? I just got back from two years abroad and would like to find other people interested in Spanish to practice with over the summer/natives if possible.
